Our History
A number of years ago our Founder, who was a serving soldier in the Coldstream Guards, was pinned down under fire in Afghanistan. He looked around and found himself thinking that people back home in the UK did not even know what was going on, as the support at the time was minimal. He wanted to do something that would galvanise the support for the troops, so that they felt that people had some understanding of what they were going through. He quickly realised that one of the few things that brings people together in a peaceful way that would show their support was music.
Initially Honour Our Troops was known for a while as Troops Live Aid and he set out in 2008 to organise a large concert that would bring people together to show their support for the ‘soldier in the field’ and at the same time give a little respite and relief to the serving military personnel out in theatre at the time.
In 2009 Troops Live Aid was changed to Honour Our Troops, as those who were involved felt that this gave more scope to assist in any way possible and that whatever HOT does we do it with Honour.
On 6th May 2010 Honour Our Troops gained its Charity Number from the The Charity Commission for England and Wales and this is 1135829. We were all over the moon when we got our Charity Number as we felt that we could now assist in so many different ways.
By this point we not only had our Charity Number, but had also registered at Companies House (07118651), Registered our Honour Our Troops logo and our Founders initial Concert Concept. Not bad for people who were serving military personnel and civilian volunteers.
Sadly at the beginning of 2011 our Founder felt that he could do no more. He had put so much time, effort and impetus into Honour Our Troops and wished to leave. We all felt his leaving and we still continue to wish him all the best and we hope we continue to make Honour Our Troops a charity he can be proud of starting.
At our AGM in 2011 we appointed a new Chairman, Mr Chris Palmer, who is a former serving soldier with a long career. The other four Trustees were all civilians and we initially had to work hard to catch up with all the administration and other factors that affect Honour Our Troops on a day-to-day basis.
By our AGM in 2012 we had all the background work nearly completed, but sadly lost one of our Trustees due to the massive amount of work which is unseen, that goes into Honour Our Troops. We took the decision to pare down Honour Our Troops and really look at our remit and objectives. We still wanted to have the basis of music, but expand from there to allow anyone to support Honour Our Troops.
In 2013 we gained our Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR) number which is SC043717. This was after many long months of hard work and we were ecstatic that our first application was accepted, as we had passed the charity test for Scotland without fail. We also gained a new Treasurer as part of our Trustees Board.
That brings us up to now and you can find out what we are up to by looking around this website.
